Comparing the Size of Subaru SUVs

Centennial Subaru carries five different Subaru SUVs and Crossovers. They all have standard all-wheel drive and a deft combination of on-road comfort and off-road capability. By most established forms of categorization, the Ascent is considered a mid-size 3-row crossover. The Outback and Forester are both considered mid-size crossovers, while the CrossTrek and Solterra EV are in the compact category. But as can be seen, there is a fair amount of overlap. 

Ascent is Clearly the Space King

If a large seating capacity is essential, the Ascent stands out with its ability to carry 8 instead of 5 for all the other models. This doesn’t mean the Ascent is only for families with four or six kids. The Ascent would also be practical for a family of four when two grandparents visit or there is an outing, and each kid wants to bring a friend. And that length allows the Outback to have noticeably more cargo space with all the seats up. But the Outback edges the Forester in maximum cargo space and passenger volume. The proportions will make a difference to you. If you prefer the higher ride height of an SUV, the Forester will appeal to you, while the Outback has a longer wheelbase for a more relaxed highway ride and more room for cargo when the rear seats are occupied.

Forster vs. Crosstrek

Though they share a 105.1-inch wheelbase, the Crosstrek is a category size down from the Forester in passenger and cargo space. With more 2nd-row legroom and headroom plus greater width, the Forester is the likely better choice if you frequently carry adults in the 2nd-row seats. The Crosstrek is a fine choice for small families, but once kids become teens, the larger Subaru models will be more accommodating. 

And What About the Solterra?

Considering Soltera among the other Subaru crossovers will likely have more to do with how an EV fits your life than dimension stats. The Solterra will be your best choice for daily commuting if you can charge it at home. It is not only the least polluting but will have the lowest operating cost by far, thanks to its all-electric drivetrain. Gas prices’ frequent ups and downs will become nothing but a memory. The Solterra will also give you a very relaxed highway ride thanks to the longest wheelbase besides the Ascent and its smooth and quiet yet responsive all-electric drivetrain.  Plus, its electric drivetrain is essentially maintenance-free.
