If the Subaru Solterra EV and Toyota bZ4X seem very similar, there is a reason for that, and Centennial Subaru wants to inform you of what is the same and what is different about these models. Much like the BRZ and GR86 sports cars, the Solterra EV and bZ4X battery electric compact crossovers are a joint effort by Subaru and Toyota. Each company contributed towards the final product, and near the end of product development, each company was able to style and package theirs (determining trim levels and features) in their own way.

Consequently, interior and exterior dimensions will be the same, and the dashboards are basically identical. Both have the same comprehensive suite of safety, and driver assist features. For all-wheel-drive models, both have the same motors and batteries with a range of 222 for the top trim and 228 for the entry trim, and both will have the same charge time.

Mechanical

The “all-wheel drive” qualification in that last sentence points to the greatest difference between the two. In keeping with Subaru’s dedication to all-wheel drive, all  Solterra EV models will be AWD using dual motors with one in front and one in the rear. Combined power is 215 horsepower and 249 lb-ft of torque, and like all-electric vehicles, peak torque is there the moment the motor turns. The bZ4X is available with front-wheel drive and a single motor with power rated at 201 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive bZ4X models have the exact same arrangements as the Solterra, though curiously, their rated power is down by one horsepower at 214 and down one foot-pound at 248 lb-ft. Subaru can be credited for providing X-mode for all Solterras and AWD bZ4Xs to help them get through specifically difficult terrain.

Trim Levels

The bZ4X has two trim levels, the XLE and Limited, and each are available with either FWD or AWD. As mentioned, all Solterras are AWD, and then  Solterra EV splits that into Premium, Limited, and Touring trim levels. So if you have decided you want the traction advantages of AWD, you have a little more choice with the Solterra. The base price for the  Solterra EV is $44,995. The base price for the FWD bZ4X is $42,000, and $44,080 for the AWD version. Heated seats are standard on all Solterras but only on the Limited trim of the bZ4X. Conversely, a panoramic sunroof is standard on the Toyota but is on the  Solterra EV Touring.

Interior Details

As mentioned, both have the same dash and feature Toyota’s digital driver information display that is newly positioned with a line of sight above the steering wheel. Seating surfaces differ. The bZ4X has the SofTex® synthetic leather material found on many of their models. Knowing their owner base, the  Solterra EV features the same StarTex® fabric you find on the Outback and Forester Wilderness Editions, which is designed to be dirt and water-resistant. A difference you will encounter on the upper trims is that Toyota’s premium audio system is by their usual partner JBL, while the Solterra’s is by Harman Kardon.

Exterior Styling

When looking at the Solterra EV and bZ4X side by side, it is immediately apparent that these vehicles are very close, but not identical. The difference is mostly in the front, where the Solterra EV has a more up-front face, with a trim outline of a grille, fog lights Limited and Touring trims, and C-shaped LED DRLs like other Subaru models.

The bZ4X front is blander but with contours that also hint at current Toyota front-end styling. Rear-end styling is similar, with the Solterra EV sporting separate Subaru family C-shaped tail lights while the Toyota tail lights fit the same space but connect in the middle. The vehicles are nearly identical in profile, with both opting to expand the black front fender cladding into the whole front quarter panel, which encompasses the headlights.

With its standard all-wheel drive and more outdoor-friendly seating, the Solterra EV has a more outdoor-lifestyle focus, while the bZ4X is aimed more at urban commuting. Opting for the Solterra EV does make you a part of the Subaru Love Promise and the brand’s traditionally high resale value. When you come to Centennial Subaru and drive the Solterra, you will see for yourself how the details make a difference and make the Solterra a better choice for the active lifestyle of Subaru owners.
