The 2023 Subaru Outback is one of the most popular models on the lineup, without a doubt. That’s probably why there are so many different trim levels from which to choose! Shoppers can opt for the Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring, Wilderness, Limited XT, Touring XT and, for the first time this year, the new Onyx Edition XT. That’s because this year the exciting Onyx Edition is available with the engine that comes on each of the other XT trim levels, a more powerful 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

Powertrain & Technical Specs

Beneath the hood of the regular Outback Onyx Edition is the same 2.5L 4-cylinder engine as previous model years. It’s capable of generating 182 horsepower alongside 176 pound-feet of torque. But the brand-new Onyx Edition XT is equipped with the same powertrain as the Limited XT and Touring XT, a 2.4L turbocharged option that improves performance up to 260 hp and 277 lb-ft. of torque. While it offers many of the same features as the rest of the line up, like the Lineartronic CVT and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, some of its other specifications change as well thanks to the new engine.

For example, the Onyx Edition can only tow up to 2,700 pounds behind it, whereas the Onyx Edition XT can haul up to 3,500 lbs. if you ever need to attach a trailer. Perhaps the most impactful change is the dip in fuel economy, which is definitely the big tradeoff for the extra power and capability. The Onyx Edition achieves 33 miles per gallon through the city and 26 mpg on the highway, while the Onyx Edition XT dips down to 30/23 respectively due to the increase in power.

Other features added to the Onyx Edition XT include a 180-degree front view monitor, an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, a full-size spare tire, a power moonroof, the STARLINK 11.6” Multimedia Navigation system and Reverse Automatic Braking.
